This year, I wanted to mix it up a bit and try something new for the 2017 Christmas Ornament Challenge put on by Carl Jacobson and Alan Stratton. I decided to mount a 3D printed snowflake, made with glow in the dark ABS filament, to a piece of walnut then cast resin over top of it. I shaped the resin and wood on the lathe, and kept the piece as thin as possible to reduce the overall weight of the ornament.
Overall, this was a really fun project to make, and it gives me lots of ideas for similar projects down the road. The only problem was some haziness that is either caused by moisture, CA glue offgassing, or a less than stellar bond between the resin and CA glue that I used to seal the wood with. I’ll try to fix that problem on the next one I make by using stabilized wood and letting any CA glue I use sit for a few days before I cast the resin on top.
