Finally got a video up about smooth faced HDPE molds! I’ve been using them for a few years for all my block style molds, and I wanted to explain whey I use them and where you can get it. I also cover a couple of vendors who are selling premade molds as well as custom made sizes.
I test drove some molds from Fred Wissen at Ptownsubbie.com as well as Jared over at Lizard Blanks, and they work fabulous. If you don’t have the tools or just don’t want to spend time making them, both vendors make some excellent molds. If you would rather make them yourself to save a little money, I buy my HDPE sheet stock from Grainger, and you can also get it at plastic dealers both online and from retail locations if you are lucky enough to have one close by. I order from Grainger online and have it shipped to the store in Reno to save the shipping cost.
If you are planning to build your own molds and want to see how I make mine, it’s the same construction method as I used to use for making melamine molds. Check out my video about making melamine molds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP-7FQNArco&t=87s
HDPE works fabulous for molds, and in most cases the casting will pop right out of the mold once you get one wall off. With enough use though, they will start to degrade. To extend the life of the mold, you can use a mold release on them too.
