“Alpine” Pine Cone Pen Blanks

(6 customer reviews)

“Alpine” pine cone pen blanks have the look and feel of a Tahoe Winter full of snow, and they are inspired by the colors of arctic icebergs.  They also have stabilized pine cones embedded in the casting that give a perfect contrast to the lighter white and blues. The pine cones create an awesome pattern that always turns out amazing!  Another fun to turn blank that produces a great looking pen!

Now using stabilized pine cones!!

Each blank is 100% unique, but the colors remain constant due to the extensive testing and documentation of specific color recipes. Standard pen blank sizes are 5″ x 3/4″ x 3/4″, and prices are per blank.

Fun Embeds-Pine Cones

One of the best parts of casting pen blanks is experimenting with different materials to embed in the casting. I use pine cones collected from my home town and around Lake Tahoe. The pine cone blanks have turned out to be a favorite blank design of both turners and pen lovers too. The interesting patterns that result from the resin filling the negative space between the pine cone branches is exquisite. These blanks always produce an excellent looking pen!

I recommend using a full CA or similar top coat finish on these blanks. You want to completely seal the pine cone parts for the best gloss finish. You can also use a little thin CA glue during turning, drilling, and squaring the ends to ensure there is no chipping the pine cone parts during milling. Now that the pine cones are being stabilized prior to casting, there should be minimal chipout if any at all.

Due to the many crevices within the pine cones that the resin can’t fill during casting, some air pockets may occur. No worries though, just fill with CA and they’ll disappear!

The Alumilite Advantage!
Alumilite is by far the best resin I’ve found for casting pen blanks. It’s a joy to turn, yet it polishes up to a high gloss. Finishing these blanks doesn’t get any simpler! Just sand it up to a high grit or use micro mesh pads, then finish it off with some plastic polish or on a buffing wheel.

GOOD BYE CHIPOUT!! Alumilite resin is not brittle like many of the mass produced or polyester resin blanks on the market. The blanks are cast under pressure to ensure there are no voids or trapped air bubbles in the resin.

I’ve turned two of these “Alpine” pine cone blanks now, and both were a wonderful experience. One worked itself into a dragon pen, and looks very much like scales. The other served for a great base to a bullet pen. The pine cone pens I’ve made are among the most commented on in my collection.

Bought 2 of these blanks and turned the first one for a Metro I Chrome that was absolutely beautiful! I loved the look and, more importantly, so did my customer. I still have the second one and plan on ordering more.

The alpine cone was the best quality blank I’ve come across so far. That’s saying a lot. It turned perfectly and my customer was beyond impressed with the out come! A++ Highly recommended!!
